One of his favourite hobbies is an interest he shares with Liane - recumbent bicycling, which involves a bicycle that you sit on in a reclined position. Stephen also designs web pages.
Liane is originally from Montreal, but after graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1987 she moved to Ottawa where she worked for about 11 years. She had her own practice for ten of those years.
Liane lists a chance to work with children as one of the principal reasons for seeking a career in optometry.
"Optometry is very pro-family oriented," she said. "It is interesting technically and there is wonderful person to person contact."
Liane added that she enjoys her field because of all the benefits that come with running your own business.
Stephen and Liane got married in Jan. 1998, and decided on Owen Sound over Ottawa as the place to settle.
But even now that they were married, it meant that if Liane was to make the move to Owen Sound, she had to close down her practice in Ottawa. It took about a year, but she was able to find jobs for her staff and merge her practice with a colleagues' so that her patients were taken care of.
"It was hard to leave my patients, but I got a chance to say goodbye to them," she said.
Even though the move was tough, Liane admits that coming to Owen Sound was the right choice.
"I think it was a good choice to come here," said Liane. "You can wake up, look at the water, and say life is good."
