Fort Frances, ON. Hull 534. Rob Farrow comments (July 4, 2018): "Photo taken Sept 29, 2009. Apparently it is not there anymore." The number 534 would suggest it was built in either 1945 or 1946. There are only two winch boats built in those years that our vessel listing says were actively used in Fort Frances, the JEAN MAY and O.M. 235. Matthew Carlson comments "it had a old model 4 cylinder Cummins, looks like the same engine as in the Okiko. It could be operated outside the cabin...There was a additional steering cable attached to the existing one inside, then just a second shift lever going outside, and a throttle control on top of the cabin. Very simple." |

Matt Carlson notes (July 9, 2018): "Likely an old model HMR4 cylinder Cummins engine (not original). Since it worked in the same area as the Hallett, it might be possible this engine may be the one that powered Hallett's winch."
John George comments (nov. 22, 2018): "Alfred Veran purchased this boat from Boise Cascade. He used it for freighting and pushing barges. He installed the outside steering so it would be cooler to operate standing outside, away from the motor. Alfred passed away and it was sold."
"Alfred George Veran Sr. passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007...Alfred moved to Grassy Portage with his longtime companion, Marjorie Morrisseau, where he spent the rest of his working life. He worked his trapline there until he moved to Green Manor in Fort Frances, Ont.
