REMORQUEUR SISKIN
SISKIN TUGBOAT
For more than two centuries, the Ottawa River and the Gatineau River have been used to transport massive quantities of lumber to markets in the United States and Europe. In the last decades of the timber industry on the river, tugs replaced the men who risked their daily lives to transport the logs along the water. These tugs were used to assemble and tow the log assemblies. Mostly built by Russel Brothers Limited in Owen Sound, Ontario, they were known as "warping" tugboats. Siskin is one of those. Equipped with a 35-inch and 3-inch (10.7 m) six-cylinder diesel engine, it was built in 1955 and fired up to 3,000 cords. It was in service on the Gatineau River from 1955 to 1993. The tug Siskin now sits in the park of the same name along Highway 105 and reminds visitors of the forest heritage of the region and the time of the log drives. It can also be reached by the Véloroute des Draveurs.
