Terry Scott notes (July 12th, 2006): "More info on Spuce Falls P&P ( now Tembec). The tugs were not all "named" and the locals referred to them by "color". The orange one being the Penny, I think the Oscar was white, there was a green one, then there was the 35 footers which the Kapus is one of, again known by colors ( the Kapus is the small white one)". The original company that owned Penny was Spruce Falls Power and Paper Co. Penny's identical twin, the Oscar, was the same build date one number different in the registry. There were about 5 others from what I can figure, some 28 footers and some 35.
In about 1996 or so, Tembec, the big world lumber giant bought out Spruce Falls and many other mills in N. Canada. The tugs got sent down to Midland in about 1999 for auction. I know the Oscar was one along with the Penny. The Penny being in better condition attracted a buyer, the guy I got her from. I heard from witnesses that were at the auction that the Penny was the only tug that sold. The rest were just sitting in the yard of the consignee which was an outfit called Wayne Jones Contracting of Midland, Ont.

Ocean Madelinot
This small veteran tugboat was built in 1946 by Russel Brothers Limited of Owen Sound, ON as the Penny for Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company of Kapuskasing, ON. In 1999, she was sold to a private owner, Wayne Jones Contracting of Midland, Ont. She was later sold again to Terry Scott of Windsor, ON. Eventually, Ocean Group of Quebec, QC purchased the Penny, and renamed her Ocean Madelinot.
