Bob and Diana McElroy sent these (Nov. 2018) ... "Here are two old photos of the Opeongo towing a boom on the Ottawa near Deep River, July 1972. It was fairly early in the morning with the mist rising and the sun shining right on the boat. We were out on the water, so the photo angle is low and unfortunately doesn't show the boom all that well. The photos might have been earlier in the summer than July - that was just the date stamp on the slide mount."
"In the years after WWII one could still see booms of logs going down river, but these were smaller logs destined for the Splint Company in Pembroke, the Gillies Brothers mill at Arnprior, or the E.B. Eddy Match Company in Pembroke and Ottawa. The rafts were drawn by the diesel tug Opeongo, which belonged to the Upper Ottawa Valley Development Company. The name "Opeongo" has a venerable tradition in the valley, being the name of the first trail or road leading into the wilderness of white pine along which the early loggers travelled." source: Deep Waters: The Ottawa River and Canada's Nuclear Adventure By Kim Krenz.

"The Opeongo, built by Russel Bros. of Owen Sound, Ont. for the Upper Ottawa Improvement Co. to move log booms on the Ottawa River, worked until 1991, when rafting operations ceased. She sat on the beach near Fort Willian until Feb. 1997 when she was purchased by Gardiner Marine. At that time, Avery Construction trucked her home in two pieces. She has since been put back together, the galley and the wheelhouse renovated, a generator added and is presently working out of Richard's Landing, Ont."
