Kagiano drifts away into Lake Superior in October 1990
John Woodward comments (Jan. 17, 2019): "From my archives and a memory of my sailing career with Interlake Steamship Company. It was west of Michipicoten island after a bad storm. I was on the Mesabi Miner at the time in November. It was really rocking." Matthew Carlson adds: "Kagiano was used in Marathon, Ontario, during the logging river drive days and was used as a sleeping quarters/cook house for the boat crews when they were logging by water."
Oct. 2nd, 1991..."Dear Mr. Woodward: The following is a formal request for information regarding an incident that occurred on October 19, 1990. On Oct. 19, 1990 an Interlake Steamship the Mesabi Miner notified the Coast Guard of what appeared to be a house boat adrift on Lake Superior approximately 22 miles due west of Michipicoten Island. Upon request of the Rescue Coordination Centre the Mesabi Miner turned around to investigate the situation.

It was discovered by the crew of the Mesabi Miner that the drifting "house boat" was in fact a barge equipped with living quarters, no one was on board and no identification marks were found.I have reason to believe that the barge spotted by the Mesabi Miner is in fact the same barge that went missing from Pukaskwa National Park on the 17th of October, 1990"...Edith LaChapelle.

Oct. 30, 1991..."I just received your request for information on the floating house barge, which was discovered by the Mesabi Miner. I found the two best photographs of the barge. I hope these will assist in your investigation"...Sincerely, John E. Woodward.

Jan. 1992: "I am returning the photographs of the barge"...Edith LaChapelle.
Addresses of Mr. Woodward and Ms. LaChapelle, at the time.
