Doug's Garage 26 Jul 2020. Let's check out a derelict Russel Brothers winch boat near Fort Frances, ON. These boats were used by the local paper mill to move pulpwood and sawlogs from the lakes near the cutting limits in the forest, downstream to the mill. Winch boats used their large anchors and half mile of cable to pull large booms full of logs across the lake. These tough little boats could even pull themselves across portages into smaller lakes using the large winch and diesel engines. For a bonus we get a brief look at the larger Russel Brothers logging tug Hallet, on static display on the waterfront in Fort Frances.
