Russel Brothers Limited OWEN SOUND, ONTARIO Steelcraft Boat Builders
Russel Brothers winch locomotive. Peter Bowers comments (July 2018): "Radiator said "Russel Hipwell" on it. Operation used the dual winch cable system to pull it and a railway car or the yard "boat/material cars" around the plant trackage. The winch was the only motive force."
Brian Westhouse comments (July 11, 2018): "I saw something like that in an Orillia scrap metal yard over 25 years ago. There was a big drum winch inside, but the winch appeared to be what powered it. I had no idea where it was used.
I'm certain it was the same item. Stubby curved slopes at the front and back, with a single door on one side. It was in the yard at Francoz Iron and Metals on West St. S. in Orillia, sometime after 1986. It reminded me of a small version of an electric steeple-cab locomotive like the ones used by Inco at Copper Cliff, but it didn't have a trolley or a pantograph on the roof. If it had a motor that part of it was missing. It was all painted hazard yellow."
