Situated in an almost idyllic fairytale setting between Lake Geneva and The Swiss Alps, the castle is famous not only for it’s imposing gothic architecture but also for the fact that it was immortalized in the 1816 poem by Lord Byron titled, “The Prisoner of Chillon”, which detailed the imprisonment of the monk Francois De Bonivard who languished in chains in the dungeons of Castle Chillon from 1530 to 1536.

In Feb of 2010, Steve Santini, (Offically named, “The World’s Most Extreme Escape Artist” by the legendary Ripley’s Believe it or Not!), will face the same fate when he is heavily manacled with 16th century wrist, leg, and neck irons, (Provided by the Swiss “Henker Museum” in Sissach, Switzerland), and is then shackled to an ancient restraint post in the castle’s dungeon. In full view of the Swiss media and television cameras Santini will, using only a combination of contortion, pain control techniques, and the natural laws of science and physics attempt to free himself from his restraints and become the first person in history to escape from the fabled dungeon of Chateau de Chillon!

Santini’s escape attempt will mark the very first time any escape artist worldwide has taken on, and attempted to free themselves from, authentic Medieval restraints in full view of the media within the bowels of a famous castle that is now a famous national historic site.
